THIRUVANATHAPURAM: Sindhu Joy, who had recently ditched the CPM to join the Congress, was allegedly pelted with stones and rotten eggs during a Congress election convention at Vamanapuram constituency on Sunday evening.
She has been admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.
The incident occurred around 7 pm at Venjaramoodu junction where Sindhu was addressing the crowd.
According to C Mohanachandran, Congress candidate in Vamanapuram, Sindhu had halted her speech when CPM candidate Koliyakkode N Krishnan Nair's campaign jeep arrived on the scene.
After his speech, Sindhu resumed her address, when the stone pelting began. "Sindhu fainted on the spot," Mohanachandran said.
The police have registered a case against six CPM workers. UDF workers staged a sit-in at Venjaramoodu junction in protest against the attack. They dispersed after the police promised prompt action against the guilty.
Medical college sources said that Sindhu had sustained a minor concussion on her head.
Meanwhile, CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said the hospitalisation of Sindhu was a drama to influence the voters. The prospects of LDF in the election would not be affected by such dramas, he added.
