ANGAMALY: Tens of thousands of people cutting across religious, political and social affiliations paid tributes to the mortal remains of Fr Paul Kariyatty, the man behind the construction of the St George Basilica in Angamaly, when the casket bearing his mortal remains was brought to the Basilica here on Monday.

Ernakulam Angamaly Auxiliary Bishop Mar Sebastian Idayathrath was the main celebrant of the prayers held at the Basilica.

Excise Minister K Babu and former Minister Jose Thettayil MLA were among those who paid homage.

The body was taken to Narakkal St Mary’s Forane Church where he served as the vicar till recently, for public to pay tributes. Fr Paul Kariyatty who was the vicar of Angamaly Parish for about 14 years contributed immensely to the field of social and cultural activities in and around Angamaly.

He played a key role in constructing the G Memorial High School in Nayathode.

His leadership qualities, organisational skills and efficiency to coordinate with different sections of people were well appreciated.

The body of Fr Kariyatty was shifted to his house in Alangad near Aluva from Narakkal on Monday evening and taken to his home parish, Alangad St Mary’s Church on Tuesday where the funeral ceremonies were held.
