Another case of 'Arabikalyanam'

Express News Service

A complaint filed by a 17-year-old girl from the district with the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has brought to light yet another case of the inglorious practice of ‘Arabi kalyanam’, or the marriage of a local Muslim girl to an Arab national.

The CWC here has asked the police officials to submit an inquiry report on the complaint. The girl has filed a written complaint to the CWC regarding the incident. As per the complaint, the girl, who was an inmate of  an orphanage in Kozhikode, was married off to a UAE citizen, Jasim Muhammed Abdul Kareem, against her will.

The marriage was held on June 13 this year and Jasim flew back to the UAE on July 1, 2013 without informing her. She added that the orphanage officials had brought her back from Jasim’s maternal home in Kozhikode and sent her back to her home in Malappuram district.
