Playwright Paravoor George Passes Away

Well-known playwright, educationalist and teacher, Paravoor George, died on Monday after a prolonged illness.

Well-known playwright, educationalist and teacher, Paravoor George, died on Monday after a prolonged illness.

The funeral will be held at 10.30 am on Tuesday at  St Thomas Forane Church, Kotteckavu near here. George was under treatment for cancer.

The end came in the early hours of Monday at Sri Narayana Medical College Hospital, Manjaali.

Over the course of seven decades, George created some of the most memorable stage plays in Malayalam literature. He has authored nearly 50 plays. Among them ‘Divyabali’, ‘Nerchakozhi’, ‘Aksharangal’, ‘Agniyudham ‘ and ‘Vaiki Vanna Velicham’ are said to be all-time hits.

He was said to have early connections with the theatre, even from childhood.

As a school teacher for more than 30 years, he had been able to make a number of followers who later became his supporters in theatre. After retirement, he turned to theatre training and rest of the time he got himself involved in family welfare missions. His creations had won many awards including Kerala Sahitya Academy award, KCBC Award 2003, Sangeetha Natak Academy award, Mathrubhumi award, J C Foundation award, Kesari Balakrishna Pilla award and Kudumbadeepam award.

He is survived by his wife Rosy, headmistress (retired) St Peters U P School, and children Denny (Qatar), Ibsan (Dubai) and Simi (Muthoot Bankers, Nedumbassery).
