Sounding the election bugle, the Congress central leadership on Thursday asked elected representatives from the district to pull up their socks for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“Your unflinching commitment to the basic principles of the party and its leaders, along with total discipline, will ensure an impressive performance in the Lok Sabha polls,” AICC general secretary in charge of Kerala Mukul Wasnik told the district convention of party leaders here. While appreciating the victory of Shashi Tharoor in Thiruvannathapuram Lok Sabha constituency by a margin of nearly one lakh votes, Wasnik wondered why a win in Attingal constituency (formerly Chirayinkeezhu) has eluded the Congress since 1991.

Asking elected representatives to tell voters about the achievements of the UPA government over the last nine-and-a-half years, Wasnik highlighted UPA’s landmark legislations such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Right to Information Act, Right to Education Act and  Food Security Act.

AICC secretary Deepak Babaria warned elected representatives to desist from “loose talk” and activities that undermine the unity of the party.

“There are issues which the party is very much aware of. It is trying to address these issues,” he said, adding that the AICC was monitoring factionalism in the state. “There is a feeling among the grassroots workers of the party that factionalism is ruining the party and their political career. This needs to be addressed,” Babaria said.

District Congress Committee (DCC) president K Mohankumar presided over the meeting.
