The State Women’s Commission has welcomed the verdicts on Shakthi Mill and Suryanelli gang rape cases. The reaction came in the wake of the major verdict on Suryanelli rape case, in which 23 convicts were sentenced by the High Court on Friday.

The commission hailed the new decision of the High Court by correcting its previous verdict. In a statement here, member of the commission Lissie George said that the two verdicts will be a warning to society against atrocities meted out on women.

The country must create an environment for women to work independently and travel without fear. She added that both the verdicts are important to ensure the safety of women. She also praised the verdict on Shakthi Mill gang rape case by the Mumbai Sessions Court by ordering capital punishment to the accused.
