THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Actor Jagathy Sreekumar, who survived a near fatal accident in 2012, has been awarded Rs 5.90 crore as compensation at an adalat held at the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) here.

The compensation amount was fixed after the insurance company and Jagathy’s wife, who represented the actor, reached an agreement at the adalat.

An amount of Rs 2.50 crore out of the settled amount will be deposited in the name of Jagathy in a nationalised bank for five years. The remaining amount will be handed over to the actor.

He had filed a case with the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) court for `13 crore in April 2013.

The petitioner’s counsel and the insurance company’s counsel had held talks and agreed for an earlier settlement and the case was called before the DLSA.

In the petition before the MACT court, it has been stated that Jagathy, who was bed ridden and undergoing treatment, was not able to do anything on his own.

‘’The prognosis of the applicant resuming his profession is uncertain,’’ the petition said. It has also been said in the petition that Jagathy had lost his memory, sensation, emotions, speech and he could not even recognise who he is due to infliction of Diffuse Axonal Injury in the brain.

It was also mentioned that the actor’s call sheets were always full and his income was increasing and stepping up year-wise and it was undoubtedly at the peak time of his career that he met with the ill-fated accident. He was seriously injured in a road accident at Panambra near Thenhipalam in Malappuram in March 2012.
