KOZHIKODE:Reyhaneh Jabbari was convicted of murdering Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi, a police officer, in an attempt to defend herself against a rape bid, in Iran. Reyhaneh was hanged in October 2014 and this became one of the most talked about and most condemned incidents across the globe.
Nusrat Jahan, from Kozhikode, too wanted to raise her voice against Reyhaneh’s plight. Nusrat, who works with the airline industry, approached a few short filmmakers and they have now come up with a short movie ‘The Written’. The story is of Reyhana Hassan, a girl from rural Kozhikode, who ends up in Iran in order to make a living for her family and meets a fate similar to that experienced by Reyhaneh Jabbari. ‘The Written’ is directed by Anwar Hussain and P Mustafa, and scripted by Vinu Abraham. Speaking more about the short film, Vinu Abraham says, “The half-an-hour film is an attempt to raise our voice against the fate of women in middle eastern countries. Nusrat Jahan, who has produced the film, dons the role of Reyhana Hassan, a girl who goes to Iran as an interior designer to support her family back in India. The movie is inspired from the life of Reyhaneh Jabbari.”
‘The Written’ was screened on Thursday at Hotel Alakapuri. Writer M T Vasudevan Nair, senior journalist O Abdulrahman, and film director V M Vinu attended the function.
“M T Vasudevan told us that the movie is good. He encouraged us to go forward with it and said that it would reach where it should reach,” said Vinu.
The team is planning to screen the movie at various film festivals and are also planning a grand Twitter release by clubbing a few other short films that deal with similar themes.
