THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: P Hariharan, 89, noted scientist, holographer and author died in Berkeley. He hails from Attingal in Thiruvananthapuram. He has to his credit over 200 papers, several reviews published in international journals and made outstanding contributions to the study of quantum effects in optical interference and holography.
He served as the director of the Hindustan Photo Films, Ooty; professor of the Indian Institute of Science, chief scientist of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Sydney.
Hariharan had worked with National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi; National Research Council, Ottawa; Hyderabad Central University; Raman Research Institute, Bangalore.
He served as the president of the Optical Society of India, the Australian Optical Society and was vice-president of the International Commission for Optics.
He received PhD from the University of Kerala for his work on photographic resolving power. He had won several international awards as well.
