Defamation case: Court records MP's statement

KOCHI: The Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Thursday recorded the statement of K C Venugopal MP in the defamation case filed by him against Solar scam accused Saritha S Nair.

In April, Venugopal had filed a defamation suit against Saritha and four journalists of two TV channels for allegedly defaming him by linking his name with a letter claimed to have been written by the accused while she was lodged in jail.

The court considered the case based on the application filed by Venugopal two days prior to the date on which the case was posted earlier. The case will be further considered on August 12.

Venugopal in his complaint alleged that on April 3, the TV channels telecast visuals of the letter containing derogatory remarks against several politicians are ministers, including Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. According to him, the telecast of the letter was part of a conspiracy to defame him, and was done in violation of Section-6(i) of the Cable Television Network Rules.

A similar petition was filed by Oommen Chandy in the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.
