KOZHIKODE: Muslims in Malabar will start Ramadan fasting on Monday as confirmations were made by different Qasis. Confirmations came after the Ramadan crescent was sighted at Kappad on Sunday evening.

Qasis included Panakkad Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal, Syed Mohammed Koya Jamalullaili, K V Imbichahammed Haji and Panakkad Nasir Abdul Hayy Shihabudheen, Kasargod Qasi and Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary K Alikkutty Musliyar, All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar, Syed Ibrahim Khaleelul Bukhari, PT Abdul Kadir Musliyar, N Ali Musliyar  and Chithari Hamza Musliyar.

The Qasis declared the starting of the holy month on the basis of the sighting of the new moon at Kappad beach in Kozhikode district at around 7.30 pm on Wednesday.

Mujahid sections and Jamaate Islami will also start fasting from Monday.

The Qasis, while announcing the Ramadan opening, exhorted the believers to respect the sanctity of Ramadan by engaging in prayers and extending helping hands to the persons, who are destitute of food.

They urged the Muslim community to keep away from the activities including extravaganza, which denigrate the spirit of holy month and actively engage in charity, meant to financially help the underprivileged persons.
