THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In all, 1,956 liquor shops were closed in the State on the basis of the Supreme Court order banning liquor outlets and bars along national and state highways. Excise Commissioner Rishi Raj Singh said a special enforcement drive was launched from April 1 to check the production and sale of spurious liquor.

The closed shops include 207 outlets of Bevco and Consumerfed, 11 five star hotels, 18 clubs, 586 beer and wine parlours, two beer outlets and 1,132 toddy shops. The Excise Department has asked the police to support the drive against spurious liquor.
