THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chicken meat was sold across the state on Wednesday largely in adherence to the rate fixed by a meet convened by Finance Minister T M Thomas Isaac the other day.

At Isaac’s meeting with representatives of chicken traders’ organisations in Kozhikode, it was decided to sell chicken meat at `158 a kg. But traders did not abide by the meeting’s decision to sell live chicken at `87 a kg. Almost all the shops refused to sell live chicken and asked customers to buy chicken meat instead. According to the All Kerala Poultry Federation, 25 per cent of chicken shops in the state did not open on Wednesday.

“The wholesale dealers supplied live chicken at `97 a kg. So how can retailers sell them at `87 a kg?” asked federation president Thajudeen.
