MALAPPURAM: Amid the spurt in atrocities against women and girls, the Areacode police is showing the way by providing girl students with self-defence training. In the first stage, over 300 students from Moorkanad Subulussalam Higher Secondary School and Kizhuparamba Government Vocational Higher Secondary School were given the training.

“Besides training students in psychological and physical defence techniques, the programme makes the girls confident. It aims at equipping students physically and mentally to tackle any atrocity and harassment,” said Krishnanunni M, the National Service Scheme programme officer of Subulussalam HSS.

The technique has been designed in a manner which helps the girls learn easily in a short time.
“Rather than teaching the girl students challenge the attackers physically, we teach them how to protect themselves and respond properly in open or closed spaces. Strong responses by women can bring down the crimes against them,” said Areacode SI Sinod K.If things go as planned, the training programme will cover all 30 educational institutions falling under the Areacode Police Station limits.
