The wedding comes against the backdrop of former CPI minister and MLA Mullakkara Ratnakaran criticizing lavish weddings and urging chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to take steps to curb them.

KASARGOD: The CPI in Kerala is asking on its MLAs why she celebrated her daughter’s wedding lavishly.

The party’s Kerala state secretary Kanam Rajendran said an explanation is being sought from Geetha Gopi, the MLA for Nattika in Thrissur district.

He told reporters in Kanhangad that the party would take action on the basis of her explanation.

Photographs of the bride decked up in gold went viral on social media and local CPI supporters complained to the state leadership of the party.

The wedding comes against the backdrop of former CPI minister and MLA Mullakkara Ratnakaran criticizing lavish weddings and urging chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to take steps to curb them.

Last week, the CPM, an ally of the CPI, suspended a Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal Ritabrata Banerjee (38) for three months for leading what it called a "luxurious lifestyle".

A photograph that the MP had uploaded on social media this February sporting a Mont Blanc pen and an Apple smart watch created a stir in party circles. When a CPM worker sought to know how the MP had paid for the items, the parliamentarian lodged a complaint with the HR of the company where he worked.
