THRISSUR: A 25-year-old woman, admitted to the Thrissur Medical College from a cooperative hospital with symptoms of fever, died on Friday evening. With this, the number of fever-related deaths in the district has risen to six in the last month.
According to Deputy Medical Officer Baby Lekshmi, the reason behind the death of Priya, wife of Sanoj from Karalam near Irinjalakuda, is yet to be ascertained. A serum sample has been sent to the microbiology lab for testing. Though rat fever is suspected, the confirmation can be made only after the detailed report is received, she said. If rat fever is confirmed, it would be the ninth case reported from the district since January.
So far, six people have died of fever - three of H1N1 and three of suspected dengue - in the district. According to the district health department, 692 cases of dengue - 281 confirmed and 411 suspected - have been reported. Thirty-three patients have been admitted with malaria, eight rat fever or streptobacillosis cases confirmed and 44 Hepatitis A cases reported.
There are viral fever 87,762 cases reported, with 3,808 patients admitted at the hospital. While there are 65 cases of H1N1 and 1,014 patients identified with chickenpox, no cases of chikungunya have been reported so far.
