THRISSUR: Lyju Tomy, who represented Kerala in the National Games in handball in 2004, is a painful reminder no team sport other than cricket gets recognition here. Lyju is suffering from a kidney disorder and requires an immediate transplant. The laurels he gained during his playing days have not come to his help during the time of distress.

Lyju Tomy

Lyju took part in National School games in 2004 as 10th standard student of Sringapuram Government Boys’ High School in Kodungallur. But he could not pursue his interest in handball, due to the poor financial condition of his house.

To support his family, Lyju earned a job in the Gulf. But he had to return home after his father fell ill.
For more than five years he took care of his father, but soon after his death, Lyju fell ill.

“Creatinine count in his blood is high and both his kidneys have been affected. He has been undergoing continuous dialysis for the past four months,” said Johnson P. O, Lyju’s uncle. Doctors have advised him to go for kidney transplant as soon as possible.

The family has approached the Kidney Foundation of India, headed by Fr. Davis Chirammel, and is waiting for a suitable donor. Lyju’s blood group is B Negative and finding a suitable donor is proving difficult.

“The surgery alone costs around `10 lakh. After the surgery, Lyju may have to spend close to three months in the hospital and it will again be expensive,” Johnson added. His friends and local residents have set up a ‘Lyju Chikitsa Sahaya Samiti’ to help Lyju.

The Samiti has opened an account and contributions forwarded to:

Lyju Chikitsa Sahaya Samithi, State Bank of India, Vallivattam Branch,

Account No: 37586179713,

IFSC code: SBIN0071254.
