KOCHI/MALAPPURAM: Eight years into the raids on the Popular Front of India (PFI) following the palm-chopping of Newman College professor T J Joseph, Kerala on Saturday again witnessed a major crackdown on it as well as the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI).
Triggered by Maharaja's College SFI leader Abhimanyu's murder, special police teams forayed into the two organisations' offices searching for evidence related to their funding, network and allegations of religious conversions.
Raids at the PFI's regional office, Malabar House, at Kottakkal, its religious education centre Sathyasarani and the SDPI's Green Valley Academy (both at Manjeri) started at 10.30 am and lasted till noon.
DySPs M P Mohanachandran (Perinthalmanna), Jaleel Thottathil (Malappuram) and Biju Bhaskar (Tirur) led the raids at Sathyasarani, Green Valley and Malabar House in that order.
Since the palm-chopping incident in July 2010, subsequent UDF and LDF governments have been sitting on intelligence reports submitted by senior police officers on the growing tentacles of the PFI and SDPI.
Political commentator Appukuttan Vallikunnu said the government should show the courage to act against organisations which have been unleashing terror and trying to enforce their global agenda of religious supremacy.
"The raids and follow-ups, that too several days after the murder, look like a mock drill just for an eyewash. We want responsible action from the LDF Government as the murder is another warning of what's in stock if such fundamental organisations are allowed a free run," said Vallikunnu, who added the CPM should snap the unholy alliance they have formed with the SDPI and PFI in many local bodies.
