KOCHI: The gang involved in the cold-blooded murder of SFI leader M Abhimanyu at Maharaja’s College in Ernakulam last week had planned to unleash an orgy of violence and spread terror on the college campus, according to the investigators.
Sources privy to the probe said the accused, who are currently in police custody, confessed they deliberately sparked clashes with the SFI.“The PFI-Campus Front workers wanted to teach a lesson to those who had defaced the graffiti. They planned to take on the political adversaries with arms. Their aim was to inflict maximum damage on their rivals. Abhimanyu happened to be just one of the targets,” an officer said.
Arjun Krishna, who had sustained injuries in the bloody attack, is recuperating at a private hospital in the city. Meanwhile, a week on since the incident, the investigators haven’t succeeded in tracing the hideout of the fugitive assailants. Though the raids at the SDPI offices and residences of party brass are continuing, there have been few if any leads on where exactly the killers are holed up.
Factoring in the possibility of the accused fleeing the state, the police have extended the investigation to the neighbouring states including Karnataka. Earlier on Sunday, K M Navas and Jaffri accused of helping the assailants to escape the clutches of law were produced before a magistrate and remanded in custody.
Separately, the arrest of Anas, hailing from Mattanchery, wanted in connection with the violence during a march to the Kerala High Court last year, was also recorded.
