THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former ISRO scientist S Nambi Narayanan said he was very happy with Tuesday's Supreme Court observation on the ISRO spy case that he should be given compensation.

''I don't want to say anything more as the case is sub judice. But I am happy and we now have to wait for the judgment,'' he said from New Delhi. The infamous ISRO spy scandal had broken on October 20, 1994, with the arrest of Mariam Rasheeda, a Maldivian national. Nambi Narayanan, project director for the cryo programme, was arrested on November 30.

Later, the CBI concluded that the case was fabricated and recommended action against the police officers including Siby Mathews (he subsequently went on to attain a DGP rank). In 1998, the Supreme Court upheld the CBI's findings.

On his acquittal, Nambi Narayanan had filed a defamation suit for Rs 1 crore. In 2001, the National Human Rights Commission had awarded him Rs 10 lakh as interim relief. Although the state government challenged the order, but the court had upheld the NHRC decision.
