KOCHI: The High Court on Tuesday directed the Travancore Medical College in Kollam to admit the students for MBBS course in the state merit seat without insisting on a bank guarantee. The court also granted permission to the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations and the Admission Supervisory Committee to issue general orders directing all self-financing colleges not to insist on the bank guarantee.

The court issued the order on the petition filed by Mohammed Shaheen Nahas, Malappuram, and others seeking a directive to declare they are not entitled to furnish bank guarantee for admission for MBBS course.

They said they got admission in the college in the merit seat. When they approached the college, it was informed they will be permitted to pay the fee only upon executing a bank guarantee for the fees pertaining to the subsequent years. The act of the college is illegal, they said.
