KOCHI: Abdul Subhan Qureshi alias Touqeer, the founder member of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) and accused in the Wagamon SIMI camp case, has been shifted to Mumbai, as part of cases probed by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). Qureshi was shifted from Viyyur Central Jail in Thrissur where he was lodged for the past two months as part of the Wagamon case probed by NIA.
“Qureshi was wanted in cases registered at Maharashtra,” said a source. “A production warrant was issued from a court in Mumbai, following which the NIA court permitted him to be taken to Mumbai. The cases there are probed by the Maharashtra ATS and the agency is likely to take him into custody for interrogation.”
Qureshi was moved from Viyyur with high-security July 8. The court in Mumbai issued a warrant to produce him there on Monday. Armed policemen from the AR camp escorted him out of Kerala. Wanted in different states, including in the Ahmedabad serial blast case, Qureshi was previously interrogated by anti-terrorism agencies in Delhi and Gujarat.
He was produced before the NIA Court in Kochi on May 7. The 35th accused in the Wagamon case was handed over to NIA for interrogation last month. The SIMI camp was held at Thangalpara near Wagamon in December 2007. Recently, the NIA Court sentenced 18 accused persons to seven years in jail and acquitted 17 others in the case. Qureshi was the SIMI treasurer when the camp was held at Wagamon.
