THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Women leaders of the Congress - Lathika Subash and Bindu Krishna - have said they get meagre opportunities in the party. They were responding to Express on the opportunities they get in the party, in the backdrop of the doctoral thesis presented by Reshmi Fernandez.

Lathika Subash, KPCC general secretary and Mahila Congress state president, said: “Women leaders get very few opportunities as far as electoral politics is concerned. When we raise the subject in party forums, there is a feeling we aren’t considered seriously. Several women leaders of the party, including Shobhana George, Jaya Darly and Shahida Kamal, have left the Congress on the issue of Assembly and Parliament seats. I had raised this issue in the party, as to why this is happening and what measures are being taken to bring them back. No one is serious.”

Kollam DCC president Bindu Krishna said, “Our party had a glorious legacy in the past but currently we don’t have anything to boast of in electoral politics. We are given seats where there are remote chances of winning, for example Attingal Parliament seat or Alathur Assembly seat or Kasargod Parliament seat.
“This has to change and we are fighting inside the party for that.”

Of her elevation as district president, she said: “I became Kollam DCC president just because Rahul Gandhi insisted the party list will not be announced without a woman being given the post.”
