KENDRAPARA: Incessant rain and flash floods in Brahmani and Kharasrota rivers and their tributaries marooned at least 2.5 lakh people of the district. The swelling rivers inundated large areas in Rajkanika, Aul and Pattamundai blocks.

The water in river Chitrotpala, Paika and Karandia were rising on Friday for which at least 52 river-side villages under Marsaghai and Garadapur blocks have been marooned.

The three-km main road from Pattamundai to Patrapur was under four feet water cutting off communication from Pattamundai to Aul. The road from Aul to Rajkanika has also been cut off.

The river Chitrotpala was flowing above the danger mark in Patakura and the turbulent river breached at three places today marooning several villagers under Garadpur block.

The release of water from Hirakud dam and incessant rain in the catchment areas have led to the flash floods, said an official.

Meanwhile, to check the spread of an epidemic Chief District Medical Officer along with other doctors and para-medical staff visited the flood-affected villages to take stock of the health conditions of the affected people.

The district administration is providing safe drinking water through 12 tankers, said District Collector Shishir Kanta Panda.
