Government decides to train girl students on self defence

The State Government has decided to impart training to girl students in self defence in high schools, Plus II and Plus III colleges.

This was decided at a meeting presided by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the Secretariat here on Monday.

The police will play a key role in imparting training to the girl students. Woman and child desks in police stations will be streamlined by posting women police officers to head them.

It was also decided that travel allowance (TA) will be paid to the scheduled tribe and scheduled caste girl students coming to schools and colleges from their villages. Besides, land will be provided on a priority basis for construction of Young Women’s Hostel.

Besides, the process for setting up a Directorate of Youth Affairs and Sports Authority of Odisha (SAO) will be hastened up. Both the offices will be in final shape in next four months.

The Chief Minister also reviewed the progress of implementation of youth policy at the meeting. The SAO will be established in the pattern of Sports of Authority of India (SAI). Official sources said provisions in the Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu sports authorities will be incorporated in the SAO.

It was decided that the Information Technology Department will be the nodal Department for distribution of laptops with data cards to scheduled tribe, scheduled caste and other talented students. A programme will be finalised for this in next two months.

Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs Ramesh Chandra Majhi, Development Commissioner Jugal Kishore Mohapatra and senior officials were present at the meeting.
