A claymore mine weighing around 20 kgs, planted on a forest route near Sanbalijod village along Odisha-Jharkhand border, was defused by a bomb disposal squad of Rourkela police on Monday.

The mine was found half-buried on an elevated mound after rainwater washed away the top mud covering it. A case was registered at the K Balang police station of the Maoist-hit Bonai sub-division in Sundargarh district.

Bonai SDPO Amresh Panda said a team of K Balang police, CRFP and DVF personnel during combing operation found the bomb on Sunday evening. It was successfully retrieved and defused on Monday.

The L-shaped mine was additionally fitted with metal splinters weighing nearly five kgs, liquid explosives of above five kgs and Emulboost (a high-energy emulsion booster). Police said from the planting pattern of the mine and choice of location it was obvious that the Maoists had plan to target security personnel on foot patrol.
