CUTTACK: In a blood-curdling incident, three persons were hacked to death and several others injured in a murderous clash between a group of anti-socials and the family of a former village head over past enmity at Safipur village under Kandarpur police limits on Friday afternoon.

Safipur witnessed the horrific battle when a group of five, led by one Ranjit Beuria, armed with swords and other sharp weapons, chased Bijay Nayak, one of the sons of ex-chieftain Kedarnath Nayak, through the village roads straight to his house. As they entered Nayak’s house, his brothers locked the doors and retaliated. The cornered group was attacked with sharp weapons and three lost their lives on the spot.

The dead have been identified as Ranjit Beuria, Dipu alias Dipak Ojha and Bapi alias Sanjay Swain, while two of their companions have been seriously injured. Bijay Nayak, Kedarnath Nayak and three other sons have also sustained injuries in the clash.

According to police, Ranjit (42), who originally belongs to Chauliaganj but has been living in the village since his childhood after being adopted by a family, had been at loggerheads with Nayak over a dispute. The enmity had intensified recently after Ranjit employed Dipu (23) as his tractor driver.
