PHULBANI: A doctor posted at Tumudibandha Community Health Centre (CHC) set an example for others by literally going the extra mile to provide medical aid to a pregnant woman in the remote Betabani village. Medical officer of the CHC Dr Abhisek Nayak walked 2-3 km along with his support staff to provide medical care to Srabani Majhi of the village as the 102 ambulance could not reach the village due to bad road conditions.

Dr Nayak was in the ambulance that was dispatched from the CHC to bring Srabani to the facility.

However, around 3 km ahead of the village, the ambulance was stuck in the road.

This was when Dr Nayak decided to cover the rest of the distance on foot.

Inspired by the medical officer, nurses Kabita Mukhi, Madhabi, Kumuduni Patra and support staff Rajesh Achari and Bishnu Prasad Praharaj too joined him.

By the time the team reached the village, Srabani had given birth to a baby boy. Dr Nayak without wasting a minute provided post-natal care to the woman which helped keep the mother and child away from any sort of danger.

The doctor’s deed was appreciated by the villagers and Tumudibandha block chairman Prakash Chandra Patra.

Besides Betabani there are several other villages in the block where health care remains inaccessible owing to absence of motorable roads.

Incidentally, Tumudibandha CHC was recently in news after a picture of a surgical contraception procedure performed in the facility went viral. Dr Nayak and a few other staff were issued show-cause notices by the CDMO over the matter.
