ROURKELA: Police have launched a manhunt to nab an under-trial prisoner (UTP) who escaped from Rourkela special jail after scaling the prison’s boundary wall on Wednesday.

The UTP is 30-year-old Suresh Barla of Vedvyas in Rourkela. Accused of attempting to murder his mother over a family dispute, Barla was arrested by Brahmani Tarang police on July 25 and lodged in Rourkela special jail.

Police sources said at around 10 am on Wednesday, the UTP managed to climb an unoccupied watch tower and cross the jail’s main boundary wall. Jail security personnel saw Barla climbing the tower, but before they could react, the UTP scaled the boundary wall and ran into the adjacent forest of Durgapur hill.

On Thursday, Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani said on basis of the report of the jail authorities, a case has been registered and search is underway for Barla. He asserted that the UTP would be re-arrested soon. “I would personally visit the jail to conduct security audit and efforts would be made to ensure deployment of staff on the unmanned watch tower,” the SP added.
