BHAWANIPATNA: A man tried to end his life after allegedly killing his wife over a financial dispute at Sanyasi Kundamal village under Junagarh police limits in Kalahandi district on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Kasturi Chandan (45). Police said Kasturi and her husband, Pramod Chandan (47), frequently argued over money from the sale of their kharif paddy. On Monday, the couple had gone to their farmland for weeding when an argument reportedly broke out over the same issue.

The money from the paddy sale was said to be in Kasturi’s possession. When Kasturi told her husband that she did not have the money, Pramod allegedly lost his temper and attacked her with a spade, killing her on the spot.

After committing the crime, the accused husband reportedly attempted to dispose of the body in a nearby canal before eventually burying it in the field.

But later in the night, Pramod was overcome with guilt and reportedly consumed poison before confessing to the crime before his son. He was immediately rushed to Junagarh community health centre and later shifted to the district headquarters hospital in Bhawanipatna for advanced treatment. His condition is stated to be stable.

On Tuesday, the son lodged a complaint with Junagarh police in connection with the incident. Subsequently, police recovered Kasturi’s body from the field and launched an investigation. A case has been registered and Pramod will be arrested after his discharge from the hospital, police said.
