WB goldsmith held for duping Cuttack jewellers

CUTTACK: Lalbag police have arrested a 40-year-old goldsmith from West Bengal for allegedly duping many city-based jewellers of gold and silver worth crores of rupees, which he had received to design ornaments.

The accused, Tapas Maity belongs to Paschim Medinipur in West Bengal. He ran a shop at Alamchand Bazar in Cuttack.

Police said one Ramesh Deo of Kazi Bazar had lodged a complaint on June 15 last year alleging that he along with other jewellers had given Maity 1.887 kg gold and 784 gm silver to make ornaments. However, they later came to know that he had fled with the valuables.

When they tried to contact Maity over phone and requested him to return the valuables, he allegedly threatened them of getting them killed by Bangladeshi goons. Basing on the complaint, police launched an investigation and arrested Maity from West Bengal on February 20. Around 4.45 kg silver was seized from him. Maity was produced in court on Monday. Further probe is on, said police.
