COIMBATORE: Five persons, including three wardens, were injured in a clash between jail wardens and prisoners at Central Prison here on Sunday.

According to sources, when prisoners were returning to their rooms after watching the weekly film show, warden Balasubramanian allegedly asked two prisoners — Ganesh and Sankar — to move fast. The duo protested, which irked Balasubramanian, who later assaulted them.

Enraged, all the prisoners retaliated by throwing stones at the jail wardens, who hit them.

In the melee, two prisoners and three wardens — Balasubramaniam, Subramani and Senthil Kumar — were injured. All the injured were admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

Though the jail authorities contained the clash, tension prevailed at the Central prison.
