CHENNAI: DMK MLA Dr Poongothai Aladi Aruna, who had earlier resigned as Social Welfare Minister nine months ago over the telephone tapping controversy, was re-inducted into the DMK ministry as Minister for Information Technology on Friday. She was administered the oath of office by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala at a solemn function held at the Raj Bhavan.
Finance Minister K Anbazhagan and Local Administration Minister M K Stalin were among those present at the function.
Later, speaking to reporters, Poongothai thanked Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for her reinduction into the cabinet. She said that she would work under the direction of the Chief Minister, while promoting the policies of the State Government.
Poongothai, daughter of slain DMK leader Aladi Aruna, resigned from the Cabinet following the publication of excerpts of her telephonic conversation with the then Director of Vigilance and Anti-corruption S K Uphadyaya urging him to go soft with regards to a corruption case involving one of her relatives.
The re-induction of Poongothai, a doctor from the Nadar community, might help the DMK party to get the community from the southern districts during the Lok Sabha elections.
