CHENNAI: In his second public appearance after his 40-day stay in the hospital, DMK chief and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi attended his granddaughter’s wedding here, on Sunday.
His granddaughter Poonkuzhali, daughter of his son Tamizharasu, got married to Premanand, son of a retired police official, Palanichamy, at Kalaignar Arangam hall on the premises of DMK headquarters, on Anna Salai.
The wedding was conducted according to the self-respect marriage system that was officiated by Tamil Nadu’s Finance Minister Anbazhagan.
State Ministers Arcot Veerasamy, Duraimurugan, M K Stalin, M K Azhagiri, Dayanidhi Maran, MP Kanimozhi, Union Ministers A Raja and T R Baalu, and the Legislative Assembly Speaker, R Avudaiappan also attended the wedding.
Besides, Congress leaders K V Thangkabalu, E V K S Elangovan, Sudarsanam, Peter Alphonse and Krishnasamy, BJP MP Thirunavukkarasu, AIADMK MLA S Ve Sekhar and VCK MLA A Ravikumar were present in the wedding.
Cinema actors and lyricist Vairamuthu also attended.
President Prathiba Patil, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Governors of several states, including Tamil Nadu, sent their greetings to the couple.
MK unhappy over rumours on health
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Sunday expressed his unhappiness over the widespread speculations about his health condition. He said: “People said they were wondering whether Chief Minister would attend the wedding. But they may be wondering whether I would attend as the Chief Minister.” Trying to establish his good health, he said, “Whether as Chief Minister or not, Karunanidhi would have attended the wedding”.
