NAGAPATTINAM: Incessant rains over the last 10 days have left eight persons dead in Nagapattinam district.

More than 45,000 people are staying in about 100 relief camps in various parts of the district.

As rains continued to lash on Monday, Ettukudi village in Thirukkuvalai taluk was flooded.

Villagers were rescued by fire and rescue services personnel on boats.

Senior IAS officer Shivdas Meena toured various parts of the district for the second day on Monday and assessed the damage to roads, bridges, crops, cattle and houses.

He visited various villages in the worst-hit Vedaranyam area and interacted with farmers.

At the Nagakudaiyan village, he met people in a relief camp.

Speaking to reporters, Shivdas Meena said nearly 1,127 houses had sustained partial or full damage, 498 cattle had been killed, and crops were submerged. Eight persons have lost their lives, he added.
