CHENNAI: Taking forward the fight against video piracy which recently touched its nadir with the yet to be released film Jaggubhai being made available online, Kollywood marched to the State Secretariat on Friday and took up the issue with Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who assured the film fraternity that he was with them on this issue.
Along with stars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, a team led by actor Sarath Kumar, president of the Tamil Film Artistes Association, appealed to Karunanidhi to strengthen anti-piracy laws in the State.
“We have submitted our plea to intensify the implementation of the Goondas Act, and have asked for strengthening of anti-piracy clauses in the copyrights law. The government has assured us of their complete support and has said it will take up the issue with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry at the Centre,” Sarath Kumar said.
Referring to the leak of his film Jaggubhai on the Internet prior to its actual release in theatres, Sarath Kumar said it happened due to technological advancements and continuous efforts were being made to check loopholes within the film industry itself.
“Manufacturing pirated versions of films or possessing them is wrong. Tamil Nadu has already implemented the Goondas Act against piracy, but we have requested stricter and more comprehensive implementation of the Act,” he said.
