CHENNAI: The State government has decided to fill 500 posts in different cadre in the Animal Husbandry Department soon, according to Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Minister Pongalur N Palanisamy.

Speaking after inaugurating a series of buildings worth Rs 4.77 crore to mark the Pongal week celebrations at the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University here on Thursday, the minister said the State government was also planning to set up 100 new veterinary health centres and there were plans to upgrade 200 health centres to veterinary hospitals.

Although the livestock count has been down this year, milk production has increased from the previous 5.4 million tonnes to 5.8 million tonnes, Palanisamy said. The minister also informed that the State government was planning various schemes to increase green fodder production.

He was speaking after inaugurating the newly constructed Central University building and field for horse riding practice at Madhavaram.
