PALANI: More than seven lakh devotees witnessed the Thaipoosam car festival of the famous Lord Muruga hill temple here today.

Most of the pilgrims had undertaken the padayatra from different parts of the state to the temple. The entire stretch from Oddan Chattiram to Palani turned into a stream of "padayatris" from this morning.

Police had made the entire stretch one-way to enable the pilgrims walk freely. More than 3,000 Police personnel had been deployed on security duty for the festival.

The Poosam festival began on January 14 and the celestial wedding of Lord Muthukumaraswamy with Valli and Deivayanai was held yesterday.

Last night, Lord Murga and his consorts Deivayanai and Valli were taken around the temple in silver chariot.

The theppam (float) festival was held at Shangmuganidhi this morning.

Thousands of devotees offered worship at Lord Murga's temples at Tiruparankunram, Tiruchendur and Solaimalai, where special Thaipoosam festivals were held.
