KANCHEEPURAM: Tears welling in his eyes, DMDK leader Vijayakant, accompanied by his wife Premalatha, and sons, Prabhakaran and Shanmugapandian, offered prayers at the famous Kamakshi Amman Temple in Kancheepuram on Saturday morning.

The Captain, who was the very picture of piety, was inside the temple between 9.50 am and 10.20 am on a Saturday when the Amman was adorned with sandalwood paste.

Seniormost chief priest at the temple, Sthaneekam Baalu Sastri, who has the reputation of having done poojas for Indira Gandhi, performed the poojas for the star couple.

Baalu Sastri's son, Giri, told Express that the significance of the pooja was that the star couple lit two lamps in front of Varahi Amman on the right hand side of the inner sanctum.

"Anyone who cries sincerely to Varahi Amman, and invokes her thrice will never go empty handed; she is quick to act to the cries of her bhakthas," he explained.

DMDK district secretary Anagai Murugesan and town secretary V M Subbarayan also accompanied.

A priest said a person offers pooja to Varahi Amman before embarking on a big project.Vijayakant maintained reticence throughout his brief stay at the temple.
