VELLORE: School students and residents of Minnur village near Ambur lay siege to a government bus on Tuesday morning.

A government bus from Ambur was scheduled to go to Minnur village located on the NH every morning at around 8 am. Mostly, the school students from the nearby villages and workers would travel in the bus.

As there is no U-turn cross at the NH while returning from Minnur, the bus usually takes a turn at the National Highway at the Vinnamangalam electricity board sub-station, which is one km before Minnur village, forcing passengers to walk to the sub-station to board the bus.

Angry over this, school students and villagers laid siege to the government bus, on Monday. The protest was led by Vasanthi, the panchayat president, vice-president Sankaran and panchayat members. The protestors claimed that their repeated petitions to the transport department were not considered forcing them to stage a protest.

While protesting, they also said that the bus route can be extended beyond Minnur village, so the bus can make a U-turn cross at the NH near Sengilikuppam.
