Historic tank in ruins

Bottles, plastics and garbage exhibit sad state of the monument

A centuries-old tank, Chinnayan Kulam, in Chinniyampet panchayat, located 40 kms from Tiruvannamalai, has been left in wilderness without proper protection and care. The tank that was known for its erotic scenes sculpted around it nearly four centuries ago, is believed to be the only historical monument in the State with such unique features. However, of late, it had turned into an open bar for tipplers. The broken liquor bottles, piles of plastic wastes and garbage exhibit the sorry state of this historical monument.

The pond was dug up in the 16th or 17th Century by Chinniyan, a chieftain who ruled Chengam. The State Department of Archaeology, in the information board at the site, said, “This monument has been declared as historical importance under the ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains act 1966 (25 of 1966).”

“The historical events and records say Chinniyan, a chieftain of Chengam, built the tank for his daughter, who was not interested in married life, for having bath. The stone steps contain erotic scenes engraved by the sculptures to educate his daughter indirectly about sex life,” said R Segar, archaeologist and Professor of History, Muthurangam Government Arts and Science College.

The tank was losing its sheen due to lack of proper maintenance. Wild growth and piles of plastic bags were found floating on the water tank and broken pieces of liquor bottles scattered around the monument depicting the neglect. “The tank was maintained till two years ago, but now it has turned into an open toilet. It is used as an open bar by miscreants during late evening hours,” said Raja of Chinniyampet.
