Former DMK minister Veerapandi S Arumugam was arrested at his residence here on Monday in connection with destroying huts and setting fire to one in a colony at Salem.

Police sources said upon receiving information, a team led by Assistant Commissioners of Police Thangadurai and Rajendran arrived at Chennai. The team lay in wait for the former minister before his house at T Nagar, since Monday morning. Arumugam, who came to Chennai to participate in DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s birthday celebrations, was arrested after he returned. Police sources said a gang had stormed into Angammal Colony, near the new bus stand in Salem, and destroyed many huts, set fire to one of them and threatened the occupants.
