1 killed in spat over mishap

The murder of a carpenter in broad daylight following a feud between two groups has sent shock waves through Pachangkuppam village near Cuddalore Old Town on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Kamalavelu, a carpenter. According to police sources, a road accident had triggered the fight between the two groups. They said Sivakumar, a resident of Pachangkuppam village, riding a motorcycle through the village road on Sunday, reportedly hit Sivaraman, a member of the rival group. After the accident, the duo sparred for a few minutes. Later in the evening, Sivakumar grouped together a few people from his neighbourhood reportedly attack­ed Sivaraman’s house.

On Monday morning, Kamalavelu went with his wife to the police station to lodge a complaint. In the evening, 15-members of Sivakumar’s group reportedly intercepted Kamalavelu when he was on his motorcycle and attacked him with sharp weapons. He died on the spot.

His body was sent to the Cuddalore Government Hospital. Cuddalore OT police have registered a case.
