Former DMK MLA dead

Former DMK MLA and the chairman of Sulur Town Panchayat S S Ponmudi died in his residence on Tuesday after a prolonged illness.

Ponmudi (58), was elected to the Assembly from the Palladam constituency in the 1996 elections.

He contested from the same seat on a DMK ticket in the subsequent assembly election, but lost it.

However, Ponmudi won in the 2011 local body elections and was elected chairman of the Sulur town panchayat. Ponmudi was also a member of the DMK’s executive body. Party sources said Ponmudi was ill for the last few months and was bedridden for nearly two months. He died in the wee hours of Monday.

DMK leaders M K Stalin and T R Baalu paid homage to Ponmudi in his residence at Sulur and also conveyed the party leader M Karunanidhi’s condolences.

Ponmudi is survived by wife, three daughters and a son.
