Tamil Nadu Speaker resigns

Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker D Jayakumar resigned from his post on Saturday.

A notification issued by Assembly Secretary A M P Jamaludeen said: “D Jayakumar, Speaker, has resigned his office of Speaker with effect from the forenoon of September 29. Consequently, in accordance with the Constitution, the duties of the Speaker shall be performed by Deputy Speaker P Dhanapal.”  Sources said he submitted his resignation to Dhanapal.

Jayakumar was elected to the Assembly from Royapuram for the fourth time in the city in May last year. He was a senior minister in the AIADMK regime during 2001-06
