The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has awarded the Pachaiyappa’s College in Chennai the highest ‘A’ grade during a reaccreditation exercise. Previously, the institution was given only the ‘B++’ rating.

“In the last six years, we have produced over 500 PhDs, which is higher than the research scholars produced by the University of Madras. This helped us get the good grade,” Pachaiyappa’s College Principal P Gajivaradhan said told Express. The pass percentage of PG students was also more than 90 per cent compared to UG courses where it is poor. “In Physics and Commerce departments alone we have produced over 100 PhDs,” Gajivaradhan added.

The NAAC has advised the institution to improve the UG results and soft skills of students, besides maintain the buildings on the campus better. Faculty members too felt that the institution could reclaim its past glory if it was administered by persons with integrity.

“Politicians have often managed to win the Pachaiyappa’s Trust elections leading to swindling of funds. We desperately hope that the new team of trustees, as and when elected, will be up to the job,’’ a professor said.
