‘Recite mantras in Tamil’

Express News Service

A Public Interest Litigation was filed at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court praying to conduct the consecration ceremonies of temples, known as “Kudamuzhukku” (Kumbabishekam), with chanting of pure Tamil ‘mantras’.

Gowthaman from Thiruvaiyaru, Organiser of Tamizhar Aanmeega Iyakkam, approached the Madurai Bench stating that a few centuries ago, the consecration ceremonies of temples were conducted by chanting hymns only in Tamil language. In due course of time, the poojas had been slowly changed to other languages, especially Sanskrit, which was incomprehensible for the common people, the petitioner added.
