Chandra Krishnamurthy to be Pondicherry University VC

Prof Chandra Krishnamurthy, vice-chancellor of the National Law University, Orissa (NLUO),  will take over as the vice-chancellor of the Pondicherry University.

According to information received here, the university has been intimated about the appointment on Monday.

Prof Chandra, who will replace Prof  J A K Tareen, is likely to assume office in the first week of January.

Before joining NLUO as the Vice-Chancellor, she  was the Vice-Chancellor of SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai. Prof Tareen’s five-year tenure ended on April 15, 2012.

Prof  Chandra is a gold medallist with first class in Jurisprudence in LL.B and LL.M from the University of Mumbai. She was the acting Vice-Chancellor of University of Mumbai from September 28, 2009 to July 7, 2010. A former Principal of Jitendra Chauhan College of Law, former Dean and Chairperson, Board of Studies in Law, University of Mumbai, Prof Chandra has been teaching Law for 33 years. She has authored many books and articles.

She was the nominee of the President of India on the Distance Education Council, IGNOU. She was also a member of the Raghavan Committee appointed by Government of India in pursuant to the orders of the Supreme Court of India to suggest ways and means to prevent ragging in Educational Institutions.

The search panel, consisting of Prof R S Mali, Prof G K Chadha and Dr M Anandakrishnan, had visited the University on October 6 and scrutinized several applications. They had shortlisted three and from among them, Prof Chandra was chosen.
