‘Teach your sons to respect girls’

Express News Service

The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) has urged parents to teach their sons to respect girls.

In the light of the recent sexual assault on a 17-year-old girl here, the party urged the government to ensure that the existing laws are implemented in letter and spirit to ensure the safety of women.

Malathi Maithri, a CPI (ML) activist, addressing the media on Friday, said that parents should teach their wards to respect girls and protect them. She said that a helpline should be started for the convenience of women.

S Balasubramanian, general secretary of the party, said that a separate legislation should be enacted for protection of women.

He urged the UT government to convene a special session of the Assembly in the wake of the recent rape of a teen and added that a woman judge should hear the case.

He also demanded reconstitution of the State Women’s Commission, which became defunct after the chairperson’s tenure ended.

Meanwhile, the Left parties staged a demonstration in front of the head post office condemning the rape incident and demanded compensation for the victim’s family.

They also sought a probe into the case by a High Court judge.
