Summer extends school vacation

Express News Service

The Puducherry territorial government has extended the summer vacation of schools by one week in view of the hot climatic conditions in the Union Territory.

Speaking to reporters, Minister for Power and School Education T Thiagrajan said that schools would now reopen on June 10 instead of the previously announced June 3.

He said that over 600 students from Class 11 in both government and some private schools failed to get promoted and that the Directorate of School Education would conduct re-examinations for them from June 10. Citing inconvenience caused to students from rural areas who are allotted distant schools, he announced that the government has withdrawn the centralised counselling system for admissions to Class 11 in State-run higher secondary schools with immediate effect.

Thiagrajan said that there had been incidents of students from Bahour getting admission in schools in Kalapet.

He explained that students could now opt to take admission in their same school or choose other institutions of their choice based on their marks.

Thiagrajan reiterated that the government was taking steps needed for implementing the Right to Education Act, explaining that guidelines for implementing 25 per cent reservation in private schools would be issued after taking legal opinion.
